Our Lord sets a very high honor upon government, so much so that the Spirit speaks of the rulers & judges of the earth as “el” & “elohim.” For earthly government carries the high duty of ruling & reigning on the earth, of judging according to the Word of God, & of bearing the sword of vengeance – delivering the helpless, & punishing the wicked with severity.
Exodus 21:6 says, Then his master shall bring him unto the judges (elohim)…
Exodus 22:8-9 reads, If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges (elohim), to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbor’s goods. For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges (elohim); and whom the judges (elohim) shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbor.
In Exodus 22:28, the NKJV incorrectly translates elohim as “God,” while the KJV & Geneva aptly see that the Scripture is speaking of earthly rulers. The Authorized Version rightly renders it, Thou shalt not revile the gods (elohim), nor curse the ruler of thy people.
The NKJV makes the same error in 1 Samuel 2:25, while the KJV & Geneva perceive that the Scriptures are marking a clear contrast between earthly elohim & the LORD God: If one man sin against another, the judge (elohim) shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? (KJV)
This contrast, between earthly elohim & Jehovah Elohim, between the children of the most High & the Son of God, shines in all its glory in the inspired words of Psalm 82:
A Psalm of Asaph.
God standeth in the congregation of the mighty (el); he judgeth among the gods (elohim).
How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.
Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.
I have said, Ye are gods (elohim); and all of you are children of the most High.
But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
Arise, O God (Elohim), judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
It is a woeful sight indeed when the gods of this world judge unjustly.
When the gods rise up against the LORD & his anointed.
When the gods harden their hearts, rather than repenting at the preaching of God’s word.
When the gods bless the wicked & condemn the righteous.
When the gods call evil good & good evil.
When the gods do not deliver the poor and needy.
When the gods slaughter the unborn.
When the gods celebrate sodomy.
When the gods close churches, & open strip clubs.
When the gods steal wives, vineyards, & elections from the people.
When the gods say, What is truth?
When the gods say, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice…?
When the gods walk in such darkness, all the foundations of the earth are out of course. Reason & truth are abandoned. Riots, violence, & sodomy fill the land.
But Elohim judges among the elohim, El-Shaddai looks upon the mighty, & neither a jot nor tittle of injustice is overlooked. God sees all. God judges all. Yea, God judges the judges. He hears the cry of the downtrodden, He hears the cry of the oppressed, He hears the voice of the blood of slain babies crying unto Him from the ground.
He will arise, & He will judge.
God says to the elohim, ye shall die like men. Every earthly elohim must surely return to the dust, and die the death.
Pharaoh is dead.
Hitler is dead.
RBG is dead.
Caesar is dead.
Pilate is dead.
And these all came before the Judge of all the earth, & gave an account. And the Lamb judged them with perfect judgment. And the Lamb continues to judge them, & will judge them as long as He lives, forevermore.
Newsom will die.
Cuomo will die.
Pelosi will die.
Wolf will die.
Biden will die.
And these will all come before the living Christ. They will bow the knee & confess that He is Lord. And the books will be opened. Those to whom greater authority was given will be judged with greater judgment.
Jesus quotes Psalm 82 in John 10, where we read:
I and my Father are one.
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken, Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?Jn. 10:30-36
Here Jesus is rightly arguing from the lesser to the greater. The rulers of this world, though mere men under the authority of God’s Word, are elohim, children of the most High. Jesus Christ is the Incarnate Word, the One whom the Father has sanctified, sent into the world, & set upon Zion, His holy hill. He is the One of whom God says, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows (Heb. 1:8-9, Ps. 45:6-7).
Jesus declares the decree: the LORD has said to him, Thou art my son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel (Ps. 2:7-9).
The Pharisees were right on their first point – Jesus claimed divinity. Yet they were woefully wrong on the second – Jesus did not blaspheme. He is very God of very God, the only begotten Son of the Father. He is Elohim.
He is the King of whom the psalmist speaks,
Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
And he shall live.(Ps. 72:11-15a)
Jesus lives. Jesus did not die like men, like earthly elohim, for He had the power to lay His life down & the power to take it up again. And He is worthy of all praise, for He loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God & his Father; to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Rev. 1:5b-6).
Truly, the gods have set all the foundations of the earth … out of course. Yet Jesus shall set all aright. Under His reign, the world … shall be established that is shall not be moved (Ps. 96:10).
All authority in heaven & on earth has been given unto Him. Go therefore & make disciples of all nations. Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth (Ps. 96:10).
Jesus is Elohim. Jesus is Judge of all the earth. Jesus is the King of glory.
Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory (Ps. 24:9).
And He is coming quickly, & all His enemies shall be made His footstool. Yea, rejoice before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth (Ps. 96:13).
Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations!
