Obedience is Better, Always

The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

Christian, you are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Your right standing before God is secured wholly apart from your works. It is 100% secured by Jesus Christ, through his righteousness. You can’t add to the perfect work of Christ. You can’t take away from it.

But know this: obedience is always better than disobedience. It isn’t easier than disobedience; but it is miles better.

Every day, your flesh is going to crave sin. It is going to fight for sin. It is going to try to beat you down into submission. It is going to do so through blunt force and through sweet nothings in your ear.

But, where sin promises pleasure, joy, and satisfaction, it only ever delivers destruction and ruin. It is ultimately only able to serve up a dish of steaming poo—and no matter how richly coated in chocolate the poo is, the aftertaste is worse than the sludge at the bottom of a construction site Porta-John.

Obedience, on the other hand, always and only delivers true pleasure, joy, and satisfaction. Though hard, it is truly satisfying, to walk in the light and according to the delight of your King, Savior, Maker, and Sustainer.

Would you have a full, abundant life? Do you want the epitaph on your headstone to read, “He Lived the Good Life With Joy and Gladness”? Then obey God. Walk according to all his precepts. God is not lying to you when he makes clear that obedience is always better.

The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
